This is the recipe that started it all for me… my adoration for Gooseberry Patch that is
I somehow received one of their hardback cookbooks via the mail a long, long time ago… it was Gooseberry Patch: Very Merry Christmas Cookbook… in the middle of July or something. Anyhow, I am not sure how I received it, but I remember being really skeptical.
I was so burnt out on cookbooks at that point. Frustrated that I couldn’t find anything that had meals and tips for a person like me…
I wasn’t gourmet- nor did I ever want to be.
I didn’t have forever to spend in the kitchen- nor did I want to.
I did want to make fantastic meals for my family and delicious home cooked food for guests from time to time.
I craved to have recipe cookbooks like the churches and communities used to put together back home… and I actually would beg my aunt and mom for their copies when I could because those were “real” recipes to me.
Truth be told, I’m not “too good” to use cream of mushroom soup and I think my Crock Pot is the greatest contraption in the kitchen.
Nothing beats recipes like Aunt Ruthie’s Cucumbers & Onions, Easy One Dish Ham Bake, Vic’s BBQ Chicken… You get the point.
But my fancy cookbooks were filled with recipes and techniques that neither inspired me nor did they connect with me the way I wanted my food to connect to others.
Sooo, when this book arrived at my door– as destiny would have it — I was skeptical.
At first glance, it looked polished and refined. Beautiful and interesting, but I had seen (and been fooled by) a lot of cookbooks like that before.
But then I started seeing names of women in the sidebars and where they were from… sharing a memory about their recipe or a great tip.
The recipes came alive to me and I was hooked a total GP fan through and through… back before this blog was even a thought.
The very first recipe– Yummy Garden Bread– I made from this cookbook later prompted me to actually purchase my first ever (and still favorite) traditional Gooseberry Patch Cookbook with the plastic comb, Best-Ever Casseroles at a local orchard shop.
The rest… well, is history
I have tweaked it a bit over the years and now refer to it as Garden Bacon Monkey Bread.
As you can see, it is super easy and unbelievably yummy… Not to mention one of the few things I actually get to “turn out” of my Bundt pan…
I think I have a Bundt complex, but that is another post entirely
You start with 4 small cans of biscuits… the kind that come in the four pack.
I cut mine up with kitchen shears… into thirds.
Pour 1/4 cup melted butter over the top.
Add 5 pieces crisp bacon crumbled… I just used 1/4 cup of these Real Bacon Pieces.
Add 1/4 Cup Green Bell Pepper- Chopped
1/4 Cup Red Bell Pepper
And 1/2 Cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Note: You could substitute onion or even seeded tomato for one or both of the peppers… or try other veggie combos.
Mix thoroughly and add to a sprayed Bundt pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until light brown.
Flip out of the pan immediately.
Perfect with a summer salad or bowl of soup!
