I was looking through my Grilling and Campfires Cooking cookbook and came across this recipe. It not only sounded delicious, it was crazy easy, so I really wanted to make it. I came across two problems though. 1) I don’t have a dutch oven. 2) I didn’t know when we would be at Mom and Dad’s camp to use their dutch oven to make this. Then I read the rest of the recipe…

There were instructions for making it in the oven! Woohoo! Problem solved!

Now when you are making this Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler, you might be hesitant like I was when it comes to the second to last step before putting it in the oven. It has you sprinkle 1 cup of sugar over the top of the batter followed by 1/2 cup of water. Trust me, just follow the directions. The result is absolutely delicious!

If you happen to be out camping, I’ll include the instructions for using a dutch oven too!

Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler Recipe

Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

If you are using a dutch oven, make a campfire with at least 21 charcoal briquettes.

If using an oven, preheat your oven to 350.

Drain the juice from your peaches and place in a greased 10″ dutch oven or 9 or 10″ square or round pan.

Mix together 1/2 c of sugar with your butter.

In a different bowl, mix together your flour, baking powder and salt.

Combine your milk and two mixtures.

Place spoonfuls of the batter evenly across the top of the peaches. Do not stir.

Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of sugar over top of the batter.

Pour your water over everything. Do not stir.

If using a dutch oven, make a ring with 7 hot charcoal briquettes and set your dutch oven on top.

Place your lid on your dutch oven and arrange 14 hot briquettes on top.

Cook for one hour rotating the lid carefully 1/4 of a turn to the left and the oven 1/4 of a turn to the right every 15 minutes.

If using a oven, bake for one hour.

Serve warm…yummo!

Ingredients

    We really enjoyed how this turned out in my 10″ D.O., even after I forgot to add the cup of sugar on top before baking in my regular oven! Instead, I waited until eight minutes before the end, drizzled maple syrup on it, and watched it firm up, almost like a biscuit/dumpling. Also, I had added cinnamon to the flour, and topped it with nutmeg. Everyone at the troop picnic loved it! It really beats the alternative dump cake recipe, that usually calls for an entire box of cake mix and a second can of peaches in a 16″ Dutch Oven. Remember: Do Not Stir!

      Can you use fresh peaches that have been frozen& would you cook them in a little water & their own juices first to get them started?
