Deep Dish Taco Squares are a lot like taco flavored pizza and bound to make for a fun kid friendly dinner.
We found this recipe smack dab in the middle of Gooseberry Patch’s Big Book of Home Cooking (which I just so happen to be giving away… have ya entered yet???)
First up, combine 1/2 cup water with 2 cups Bisquick and form a pizza-like dough.
Press the dough into a lightly greased 9 x 13 pan and pop it in the oven at 375 for 9 minutes… I got to use my new Le Creuset Stoneware that I have been testing out to see if it really is worth all the hype (and price)…
Truth be told, I cannot lie… I am sooo in love with it.
Side track with me for a moment…
My new oven has driven me crazy since the kitchen remodel. I had been burning everything except cookies in the top oven (I was using silpat liners and not having a bit of trouble… which was a little mind boggling considering the other issues) –at first I figured I was just learning the new oven… but after a while I about gave up and started baking most things in the lower oven… totally defeating the point of the double oven feature.
Enter my French friend Le Creuset… everyone claims it bakes so evenly and beautifully…
So, I decided to give it one last try and you know what?!? The four dishes I have baked since in the upper oven have come out perfectly!
No burning.
No uneven browning.
No need to turn the dish half way through…
Mark me down as impressed.
Now I just need to take out a second mortgage to stock my kitchen with all their beautiful bakeware… I kid… about the mortgage.
I do figure that if they last a lifetime– like everyone claims– then eventually they will pay for themselves…eventually.
They do look pretty displayed too…
Anyhoo… enough of my inner bakeware struggle.
Pop that baby out of the oven after 9 minutes and set aside.
Now toss 1 chopped bell pepper in a skillet.
Add 1 lb of ground beef and 1 onion chopped.
And sprinkle on some garlic powder
Psst… my bell pepper was gianormous! Gotta love those in season peppers. Since I didn’t want to over power the dish, I took about 1/4 cup of the peppers and froze them up for a future dish…
Once your ground beef is browned, drain…
And add in 8 oz of tomato sauce
And one packet of taco seasoning. (Note: if your kiddos prefer a milder dish, I would reduce the taco seasoning by about half).
Mix things up nice and GOODe and then spread over crust.
Now in a separate bowl, mix up 1 cup of light sour cream…
Now spread evenly on top of the ground beef
Truth be told, I always get nervous on this part of these types of recipes… what if I don’t spread things evenly?!?
So I usually place dollops across the top …
And then use the back of a spoon to smooth things out and bring things together.
Aw… Nobody’s perfect… now sprinkle with paprika…
Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes
Ta- Dah! Now serve up with your favorite taco fixins…
Miss Add insisted on yellow tomatoes!

Does it have to be Miracle Whip? an I use mayonnaise? I want to try this out. I already have all the ingredients on hand, but we don’t use Miracle Whip.

I am sure mayo will work just fine.

I got a new double oven about 2 years ago and had the same trouble. My first one got so bad, though, that we actually sent it back. Things were turning black within moments of going in the top. The replacement has been better, definetly went through an adjustment phase and have also had to buy lots of new pans, trial and error process. Pyrex has been good so far but don’t do much baked goods in the top, still too nervous.
