This post is a part of a new series I started about the faces behind my food.
Miss Leah is a good friend of mine. Long-time readers may remember her from the Double-Mama Freeze-o-rama… (Did you see that pic of our babies?!? They have gotten so big since then… I’m sure Leah and I haven’t aged a bit, now have we ;))
Anyhoo… Recently I went on a Corn Tour with Indiana’s Family of Farmers to learn more about seed choices farmers make and one of the stops on the tour was Miss Leah’s farm.
We often tease Leah and Matt that they are creating Old MacDonald’s Farm at their new home.
(Thanks for the pics Leah)
Former dairy farmers, they sold the farm to move closer to their kids’ school and proceeded to populate their new homestead with chickens, 4-H pigs and the latest addition, a dairy calf.
Leah informed me they would also be adding goats too! It is clear that while that you can take the farmers out of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the farmers!
Leah explained that the summer project for her kids will be growing sweet corn to sell this summer to build up their college funds.
Leah and Matt talked through their seed decisions with us and helped us understand the differences between the management of sweet corn vs. feed corn.
The Beyers choose to plant GM Sweet Corn in the field behind their house because their field is actually inside of their neighbor’s field of GM Field Corn.
But unlike their Field Corn neighbors, the Beyers plant their Sweet Corn (the kind you eat off the cob) a few rows at a time (instead of all at once) so the kids can harvest their corn this summer a batch a time to sell.
So the Beyer kids will be having Sweet Corn stand this summer much like a lot of other kids would have lemonade stand ;).
And, I for one will be one of their customers all summer long– Yum!
Later this summer I will update this post when I go back to Leah’s on another tour where we will harvest some of the corn ourselves and make Freezer corn together… Leah’s method for Freezer Corn is legendary around here and I cannot wait to give it a try!
Stay tuned…
