Do you love Ham and Beans as much as I do? Have you ever made them before? I hadn’t before yesterday. It is SO simple, that I will definitely be making these Ham and Beans again and again!

Aunt Lou here.

We found this great deal on a huge spiral cut, picnic ham and made up this Brown Sugar Ham that was yuuuuuummmmmy! And I already knew what I was going to do with the leftovers…there was no other option than Ham and Beans for me!

There are quite a few recipes that my Momma made while I was growing up that I absolutely loved….Ham and Beans is definitely one of them. We probably ate about half of our almost 11 lb ham, and I couldn’t resist anymore. It was time to make my very first pot of Ham and Beans.

I’m not really sure why I had not ever made a pot. I guess I thought it might be hard. It seemed simple enough, but it is Ham and Beans! You don’t want to mess that up!

It just so happened that Mom and Dad were at my house putting a new roof on our house, so I didn’t even have to call to find out the recipe! It was WAY easier than I thought!

(Psst…wanna make them in your crock pot? Cris has got you covered with this Crock Pot Ham and Beans recipe over on Recipes that Crock!)

Ham and Beans

Take a large pot (one that is much bigger than your hunk of ham) and fill it just under halfway with water.

Put it on the stove on high heat and throw your ham in.

Once your water is at a rolling boil, throw in your beans.

Make sure your beans are completely covered, adding water if necessary.

The most important thing is to check back periodically, give your beans a stir and add water when needed.

Three hours later, turn  your beans off, bake some cornbread and bon appétit! Just like Momma makes it. 🙂

Uh… what KIND of beans?? Baked beans out of a can, or navy beans out of a package, or what? Any flavoring besides the ham? How does it get the color shown in the picture?

    Thanks!

You can use any kind of beans, I use large lima beans, but there are small limas, and green limas, but I use the whites, you can use Navy beans, or northern, put in one lb of beans, soak them over night, and in the morning, fill the pan to just barely cover the beans, and put in your ham, , and use a couple of ham hocks, this adds flaver, cook on a midium simmer, check your beans for tenderness, if you are using a crock pot, put on high for 3-4 hours.. Enjoy
