Have a recipe that calls for Greek Seasoning, but don’t have a store in a 20 mile radius that carries it? I have your solution! Make your own Greek Seasoning!
Aunt Lou here.
I picked out this delicious Slow Cooker Melt Away Ribs to make the other day. As I was looking at the recipe, I saw Greek Seasoning as one of the few ingredients.
Hmmm…what is that? So, I did what I always do when I don’t know what in the world a recipe is talking about, I called Cris. 🙂 She told me that it is just in the seasoning aisle and should be easy to find. Sounded good to me, so I sent Michael to the store.
(It should be noted at this point in the story that Cris lives just outside of Indy and within driving distance of a Penzey’s store. I, however, live smack dab in the middle of rural southern Indiana.)
Michael went to Jay-C, Ruler Foods and Ben Franklin (yes, they carry spices…who knew?!) and was looked at like he had grown a few more heads. No one had heard of this spice. He was told he would have to go to a bigger town to find it. Fantastic.
Once I heard this, I started looking around online and found a few different recipes for Greek Seasoning. There are a TON of seasonings in Greek Seasoning, so I did what I usually do in a crazy situation…I looked up a bunch of recipes and figured out what would work with what is in our cabinets. 🙂
Since I would be pulling all THIRTEEN of these spices, I figured I might as well make enough to have some on hand for future recipes. I had just used the last of one of my spices, so I washed up the container, tore off the label and got out my trusty Sharpie to make my own “label”.
