When I set out to figure up my meal plan for my $5o Challenge, I knew I was going to include Momma’s French Toast (with a side of bacon…yum!).
Aunt Lou here.
I love my Momma’s French Toast…like REALLY love it!
When I was a kid, my Dad had a rule for Saturday mornings. If you are in bed at 9:00 a.m., you and your bed will get wet. It could be from a good old school Super Soaker (which back then was one of my favorite NEW toys), a spray bottle or just a plain ol’ glass of water poured on your head. I am sure that Dad would have kept coming up with creative ways to give me my wake up call, but Momma took pity on me.
If there is one thing that will bring me out of bed with a smile on my face, it is Momma’s French Toast. So usually around 8:00 or 8:30 Momma would have the griddle going and that wonderful aroma of cinnamon and vanilla would stir me awake. And when Dad would come back in around 9:00 to make sure I was up, I was smiling from the table with a big stack of french toast.
Now there was something that I didn’t realize though. Momma’s French Toast is different from any other french toast I have ever had before. It has taken me years to remember when I go to a restaurant to NOT order french toast. Momma’s French Toast is so flavorful and amazing that it makes french toast from a restaurant seem bland in comparison. It never failed that I would see french toast on a menu and remember Momma’s French Toast, order the restaurant’s french toast, dig in and be horribly disappointed. So, lesson learned. I am too spoiled by Momma’s French Toast to eat french toast at a restaurant. Luckily, this recipe freezes really well, so you can make it once and eat on it all week!
Now Momma doesn’t use measurements on this recipe. So I tried my best to pin her down on her measurements and then when she still gave me answers along the lines of “until it looks right” and “quite a bit” , I did some tinkering myself. So please excuse the “ish”es in the recipe. You can tailor it to fit your likes…I tend to go heavy on the vanilla…yum! 🙂
