I am so stinkin’ excited to introduce you to someone who is having a huge impact in my everyday life…
Meet Millie.
She is my Walking Treadmill Desk.
Truth be told? I am on her right now as I write this.
Now long time readers will remember El (who is now retired, bless her snarky little soul) and some may remember Em (who is still alive and kicking… my butt).
But Millie is a different breed… she is a treadmill–something I swore I would never own because I am allergic to the boredom. However, Millie is a trickster, ya see, she is a walking desk too. A desk designed for people with sedentary jobs like mine… she keeps us walking while we are distracted by our work.
It is a BRILLIANT concept. Millie keeps me moving while I am working and I don’t even notice her. Brilliant I tell ya.
You might ask yourself why someone would even want an odd thing like a walking treadmill desk?Well, apparently sitting down for hours on end while you crank out content is not all that healthy for ya… which kinda stinks for those of us that well… need to crank out content for a living. Puts us in quite the pickle actually.
I mean just ask Dr. Google what sitting for long periods of time will do to ya and he will scare the never-seen-a-day-of-yoga pants right off of ya.
So what’s a girl to do?
I’ve tried everything… gyms, elliptical, dvds, biking, walking and Wii Fit (is it me or is the weigh-in lady on that thing just a wee bit judgmental ooohs and ahhs when you step on the scale?).
The closest thing I have come to find as a solution is my Fitbit. Even on my crappiest of days, I am wearing her. And clocking some days less than 3,000 steps when deadlines come a knocking.
On average (because I did tally it) my fitbit tells me I naturally move about 4600-4700 steps a day. And that is usually WITH exercise. So even with my exercise, a lot of days I don’t reach past the sedentary lifestyle threshold of 5500 steps, let a lone come anywhere near the recommended 10K steps a day.
I tried the 10K a day back in January of last year… last 11 days. I just could not spend 2-3 hour on the elliptical-all while exhausted from the day-in the evenings to make up for my day of sitting at the computer.
I have always teased Puddie that if we lived at Disney where we walk anywhere from 15K to 25 K steps in a day I could finally feel good about my activity level. But as it stands, Mickey won’t let me live there and mama still gots to work to pay the bills. So I spend a lot of time feeling guilty. And even more time feeling really low on energy.
I have always heard it said that a body in motion, stays in motion (thanks Newton 😉 )… and I knew a LOT of my energy level issues in the evening had to do with my sedentary life.
But will Millie really make a difference?
