Dear Reader-
As I have started writing more over here on the OG (original) blog, I write about board games often and it occurred to me over the holidays that some of you might wonder why…
That’s because the WHY hit me right smack in the face on Christmas day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
As silly or dramatic as it might sound, board games have changed my life… and the lives of my family and friends.
Changes that a lot of people crave and that are really hard to come by these days… just sayin’
So, I thought it might be worth sharing with you, in case you too are seeking something similar…
Board Games: A Personal History
I have personally loved board games for as long as I can remember. I have vintage games from my childhood to young adult life lovingly stored on my game shelves.
But the game changed for me (see what I did there 😉 ) when my daughter was little.
I would play countless hands of SkipBo with her and then one day a friend introduced me to modern board games and I fell in love.
And when I discovered playing games was just as enjoyable for the kid and adults alike, I was thrilled.
I also noticed after game nights it my little family felt so connected.
I. Was. Hooked.
Truth be told, I have been on a mission to create the best family game nights ever– ever since.
Over the years, our love for board games has spilled over into camp life and holidays with Aunt Lou’s family and my mom and dad. And, we had been playing pretty consistently for the last four years, pretty much anytime we got together.
We started with fun and easy party games then I taught them many of the games I have shared with you here on this blog and several others.
And, now, everyone wants to know what new game we are playing when we get together.
So many memories made, one game at a time.
So much joy.
The Change We All Crave
Which brings me to the holidays.
I was taken aback on Christmas evening after a day full of board games, my mom and dad’s house was still a buzz.
There were games being played in the living room, upstairs and in the kitchen.
And, I took a minute to just breathe in just how amazing the moment was…
Laughter filled the whole house.
And somehow, in this tech-saturated world we had achieved what can feel impossible…
No one was scrolling endlessly on their phone.
We were simply way too busy enjoying precious time with each other.
Everyone age 10 to 66.
In a world where our attention is so divided, board games can create a path to reconnect with those we love the most.
And that is why I love board games.
